These are the lyrics to a hymn that expresses the prayer of Christians at the end of the Middle Ages. It was composed in Latin by Jacopone de Todi, an Italian Franciscan who died in 1309. Every year during Passion time and on September 15 (feast of Our Lady of Sorrows), Christians sing and meditate on this beautiful prayer of compassion.

Her face in tears,
the mother of sorrows
stands beneath the cross where her son is hanging.

Her poor soul groans so much,
so distressed and so grief-stricken,
as if struck with a sharp sword!

What suffering, what agony,
this mother endures
near her only Son!

In her most bitter anguish,
this good mother sees
the torments of her gentle son.

What person would not weep
to see the mother of the Lord
in such great pain?

Whose heart would not break
before the mother of Jesus,
suffering with her son?

For his people who have sinned,
she sees Jesus tortured
and torn with lashes.

She sees her well-beloved Son,
alone and abandoned by everyone,
expire with a great cry.

Good mother, O source of love,
let me suffer in my turn,
so that I might weep with you.

Christ may I, at the hour of death,
with your mother's help,
have a share in the palms of victory!

And when my poor body dies,
let my soul enter
into your glorious paradise.
